How to Effectively Plan Your Work Week Outfits

We’ve all had those mornings where we wake up, stare at our closet, and feel completely unsure about what to wear to work. To avoid that stressful situation, taking the time to plan your outfits on Sunday can make your week so much easier. Here’s how you can do it.

Forget Outfit Planning Apps

This post isn’t about using expensive outfit planning apps. Honestly, I don’t even use one. So, don’t waste your time looking for one either. The truth is, you don’t need to pay for an app to organize your outfits. The steps below are simple and effective, and you can do it all on your own without the need for extra apps or subscriptions.

Step-by-Step Outfit Planning

Start by looking at your schedule for the upcoming week. Do you have any meetings, special events, or casual lunches? Are there days you’ll be working from home, or will you be in the office all week? Knowing what your week looks like will help narrow down your outfit choices immediately.

Once you have a clear picture of your week, check the weather forecast. While weather can change, a general idea of whether you’ll need a light jacket or a warm sweater will help you plan accordingly.

Now, think about any specific clothing items you’re excited to wear. Perhaps there’s a new shirt or dress that you’ve been waiting to style. Match these “must-wear” pieces with the days of the week that make the most sense based on the schedule and weather you’ve already considered.

Organize Your Outfits

To make the planning process smoother, create a dedicated space for your outfits. You can use a separate rack or make some space in your closet to hang everything for the week. Organize the outfits from left to right: Monday on the left, Wednesday in the middle, and Friday on the right—just like a mini wardrobe schedule.

For each day, start by placing the key pieces you’ve selected in their spot. If it’s a dress, you’re already set. For other outfits, complete the look by adding pants, skirts, or shorts. Finish the outfit with shoes—this can be done last, especially if you rotate your shoes each week, which is what I do. It makes the final decision easier when you’re already dressed.

Essential Work Wardrobe Items

If you’re just starting to build a work wardrobe, having a list of essentials can be a great help. Consider creating a wardrobe checklist, so you always have the basics covered. You can save the list on your phone, Pinterest, or bookmark it for quick access whenever you need it.
