Choosing the right art for your home can be overwhelming when you have a long list of favorites. Whether it’s art, photos, or prints, sometimes narrowing down your choices can be tough. A gallery wall, however, is the perfect solution for anyone who loves variety and wants to display multiple pieces. It’s a wonderful way to highlight your style and showcase your personal taste. Mary Lauren, the creator of Headed Somewhere, shares her advice on how to turn a gallery wall into a powerful focal point in your home.
1. Pick the Perfect Spot
When it comes to gallery walls, location matters. Find a wall that’s easily visible when you enter a room, like one above a sofa, bed, or dining table. This ensures your gallery wall instantly grabs attention and sets the tone for the rest of the space.
2. Choose Your Centerpiece
Start by selecting one or two larger pieces of art that will draw the eye first. Once those are in place, fill in the gaps with smaller works. For instance, when browsing for prints, I found Brutalized Gainsborough 2 by Chad Wys, which became the largest and most impactful piece in my gallery wall. Building the arrangement around these focal pieces creates a cohesive look.
3. Strive for Balance
Balance is key in creating an aesthetically pleasing gallery wall. After receiving my prints, I laid them out on the floor and tried several different arrangements before settling on the perfect one. Odd-numbered groupings often look best, and it helps to place larger prints at opposite ends to evenly distribute the visual weight across the space.
4. Frame Your Display
To enhance your gallery wall’s focal point, consider “framing” it with surrounding furniture and décor elements like plants, a coat rack, or shelves. I framed mine with our sofa, a fig tree, and a hanging pathos plant. These surrounding elements not only help balance the space but also make the artwork stand out more prominently.
5. Make It Personal
The beauty of a gallery wall is its personal touch. Choose art that resonates with you, and consider adding family photos or sentimental items. The more personal you make the space, the more likely it is that you’ll love it for years to come. Remember, a gallery wall isn’t just about filling space; it’s about creating a visual story that reflects who you are.
By following these tips, you’ll be able to create a gallery wall that not only fills a blank space but becomes the highlight of your room. Enjoy curating a collection that’s uniquely yours!
