5 Simple Ways to Fall in Love with Your Home Again
Do you ever look around your space and wish for a bigger, nicer home? If so, you’re not alone. Many of us daydream about owning a perfect home, yet often we overlook the potential of the one we already have. Whether you’re living in a small apartment or a shared space, learning to love your home—just as it is—can bring a sense of peace and satisfaction.
I completely understand the desire for something bigger or better. My husband and I have lived in a 300 square-foot studio apartment for almost a decade and now reside in a master suite at my parent’s house. Though buying a house is something we talk about, we enjoy the simplicity of our current living situation. Over the years, I’ve learned to make small changes that help us love our home again—and I want to share those with you.
Why Is It Important to Love Your Home?
You might wonder, “Why bother loving my home if I can’t change it?” After all, isn’t it better to focus on what you don’t have rather than what you do? The truth is, your home plays a big role in your overall well-being. It’s where you relax, recharge, and connect with loved ones. If you’re constantly dissatisfied with your living space, it can affect your happiness and productivity. Learning to appreciate what you have—and making it work for you—can bring unexpected joy and contentment.
Even if you’re not able to move or upgrade your home, cultivating a sense of love and appreciation for it is essential. Embracing your current space allows you to live more peacefully and reduce the yearning for something different.
1. Simplify Your Space
One of the easiest ways to love your home again is by simplifying it. Clutter can make even the most beautiful spaces feel cramped and chaotic. Start by getting rid of unnecessary items that no longer serve you. Go through each room and toss expired products, broken items, or anything that adds to the mess. Once you clear out the clutter, you’ll notice that your space feels bigger and more open.
You don’t have to declutter everything at once—take it room by room, and focus on progress rather than perfection. Less stuff means more space, and you’ll feel more at ease in a tidy environment.
2. Rearrange Your Furniture
If you’re feeling bored with your home, try rearranging your furniture. Moving things around can make a room feel fresh and new without spending any money. Swap out your décor, change your curtains, or update your throw pillows. Even small changes, like adding a new piece of art or updating your bedspread, can make a big difference in how you feel about your space.
Of course, if you’re able to paint walls or remodel, those bigger changes can also breathe new life into a room. But sometimes, it’s the little things that can make a home feel completely renewed.
3. Create Space for Fun and Creativity
Make sure your home is a place where you can do what you love. If you don’t have space to engage in hobbies, it can lead to dissatisfaction. When my husband and I lived in a 300-square-foot apartment, we made room for dinner parties, creative projects, and even a workout space. The key was keeping things decluttered and prioritizing activities that brought us joy.
Whether it’s knitting, painting, or even just having a place to read and relax, creating space for creativity can help you feel more fulfilled in your home. It’s about making room for what matters to you.
4. Make It Cozy
The atmosphere of your home can significantly impact how you feel about it. Make your space feel like a haven by adding cozy elements that make it inviting. Think about soft throws, ambient lighting, and pleasant scents—these can all help create a warm, comforting environment.
The Danish concept of “hygge” is all about creating a cozy, happy space. It’s about embracing small comforts that make your home feel nurturing. A cozy reading nook, a warm cup of tea, or some fluffy socks can make a huge difference in how you perceive your space. When your home feels like a sanctuary, you’ll enjoy spending more time there.
5. Focus on the People in Your Home
No matter how beautiful your space is, it’s the people in it that make it truly feel like home. Work on nurturing positive relationships within your household. Small gestures, like warm greetings or planning activities together, can enhance the atmosphere and bring more joy to your space.
One of the tips I love from Gretchen Rubin’s book Happier at Home is to “act the way you want to feel.” If you want a more cheerful home, lead by example. Show affection, appreciation, and kindness to your family. When the environment feels filled with love, your home will be a place you truly cherish.
Embrace Your Space and Make It Yours
Loving your home doesn’t require a complete overhaul—it’s about making small changes that bring you peace and joy. Whether you simplify your space, create room for creativity, or simply focus on creating a more loving environment, these actions can transform how you feel about your home.
Start with small steps, and remember, you don’t need a bigger or fancier place to create a space that’s perfect for you. With a little effort, you can make your current home a place you’ll love to spend time in.
